How to become a God of our own life

I haven't been writing here for a while...Now I have been really inspired because the place where I am and the people around me!! Thank you ALL...

Here are some random thoughts about life. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Don't take it too serious!! :)

BALI 2013

We are living in this world of thousand of Gods and spirits. There is a God or a spirit for everybody, we just have to pick one.

Having all these spirits and gods, I feel that we humans are kind of loosing ourselves and relying on Gods. Many of us are calling for the gods or spirit everyday for all kind of things like protection etc. What about calling ourselves for protection? We always tend to ask help from others...How about asking help from our inner self?

We are alone inside us whole our life, no one can get inside us. We are alone when we born and we are alone when we die. We can have lots of people outside us but NO ONE is really inside us, there we are always alone. Its like we have our own little world inside us.

When we finally realize, that inside, we all are alone and we all have our own little wolds, we can get to know it and maybe start doing things in it.

The world we have inside us is private and only the person him or herself can change it! We create our own worlds and some of us are more in control for all the changes and things happening in our worlds than others depending our level of mind and body control.

Everything affects our own inner world, the way we eat, speak, exercise etc...Our attitude creates the future for the world inside us.

First would be good to get the know the world inside us by walking around it and spending some time in it, just observing...The more knowledge we have about ourselves, the more better control we are able to achieve.

We can let people to visit our world but they hardly have time to see the whole thing. We normally have  some areas we let them to stay for a while, some times people stay there for a longer time but only if we let to.

Most of us also are just living in our own wolds not really seeing it or getting most of it. We are just hanging out there not paying attention what is really happening.

We are the air, the ground, the sky and all the trees in our own world, we are the world. We should stop just living in in it, we should become gods of our own lives and be a observer up in the sky and make decision for our well being, for our happiness.

Our worlds are changing moment by moment, do we want it or not, and we should not let the world change us, we should change the world.

We should be in control, we should be the gods of our own lives and decide how much suffering and happiness is in our world.

We can choose.

Stepping in the position of a observer gives us a better view of our own selves which helps us to manage it more efficiently.

Let's our hearts to be guides in our world and let's be observers,  GODS.

Let's be in control and decide sadness or happiness.

I decide HAPPINESS.

My Preparation For The Meditation Course In Nebal

I haven’t been writing for a while so I thought now would be good to write something down.

I will write about my time here in Africa but also my preparation for my trip to Nepal.

Will I find enlightenment?  Will I learn to meditate? Will I find the inner peace?

Those are big questions and you might get some answers between the lines.

Kopan Monastery

So what has been happening since last blog…I have been working on cruise ships, mainly in Mediterranean, and while doing that I haven’t really had time to concentrate on any other things!
Work makes by happy but it's just part of my happiness. I had a good period of work and now is time to concentrate on other stuff. I have two major happenings this year. One of them is what I am currently doing, serving on the Africa Mercy in West Africa and the another one is studying meditation in a monastery in Nepal.

Big part of my happiness is my family and specially my kids. I just had amazing weekend with them before I came here in Africa. My children are part of me. It is a challenge to have all these adventures and still have the time with your family, but at the moments it feels like we are all happy how things are, we are in balance.

MY HAPPINESS

The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet.  ~James Openheim

I have been thinking my happiness and there is a one thing which has been on my mind for months now. I will share it with you all.

All these travels around the world has given me a view, it has opened my eyes. What I mean about that is that I have started to see and feel what I have back home. I have started to appreciate my family and friends more than ever. The longer I have been travelling the more I have been feeling their importance to me. The point is that I had to go far, far away to see what was close to me. So all this time searching for happiness the best things in my life have been where I started my adventures, home. I really love my family and friends.

We really shouldn’t go so far to realize what we have around us but sometimes it helps. Sometimes we need to go far away to see the big picture, to see what really matters to us. If you are a better person than I am you should be able to appreciate to things you have without being away.

We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.  ~Frederick Keonig

MY SEARCH FOR TRUE HAPPINESS

People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness.  Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.  ~H. Jackson Brown

My time here in Africa is part of my happiness but at the same time I am exploring myself and my happiness. I am living here in a Christian community and feeling people’s energy and thoughts. I feel that I am finding my own religion. I come from a Christian background but I am never felt really close to it. My time here in Africa has brought me closer but I still feel I need something else, something which makes me feel me. I don’t want to pretend to be a Christian because it just not who I am, I can’t follow Jesus because I don’t want that life, it’s just not for me.
I am finding something that makes me feel complete by reading books about Buddhism. People have attendance to seek someone to believe, I don’t have that. I don’t need a God to tell me what is right and what is wrong, I can feel it in my heart. I believe my heart is my guide which guides me through life.

MEDITATION COURSE IN NEBAL

Objective: Ultimate happiness

Kopan Monastery

As my journey continues I have booked a course in Nepal. The course is called “November course” and it is a one month long and held in a monastery in Kathmandu. I have received a daily schedule for that month and this is how it’s look like.

Daily schedule
5.30 am - Prostration
6.00 am - Morning tea in the dining room
6.30 am - Morning Meditation
7.30 am - Breakfast
9.00 am - Teachings
11.30 am - Lunch
2.00 PM - Discussion groups
3.00 PM - Break for 1/2 hour
3.30 PM - Teaching
5.00 PM - Tea
6.00 PM - Guided Meditation
7.00 PM - Dinner
8.00 PM - Guided meditation, question/answer

On that month I will be isolated from the outside world. I will have no access to phones or computers. I am not allowed to consume alcohol, have sex, listen music, watch TV or eat meat in that whole time I am there in the Monastery. I am not allowed to read any other books rather than the ones related to the course. Sounds really challenging!! J

MY PREAPARATION FOR THE COURSE

I have been started to read books recommended by the monastery and I have found them really interesting. I also been meditating, I find it a bit difficult but with time I think I can master it in some level.  I have discovered some amazing things about meditation and Buddhism.

Did you know meditation is not just calming your mind and sit in silence? I didn’t.

There are three things related to meditation to get to the final stage. You should meditate with compassion which is the most important. What it means? It means that you should first find compassion before you even think going further. How I understand this is that I should first learn the way to help other people with compassion which I feel I am already doing. I know already that the true happiness can only be found through compassion.
If you wonder what compassion is, well this is what I found in the dictionary:  a feeling of distress and pity for the suffering or misfortune of another, often including the desire to alleviate.

Another one is the actual self-meditation also called single pointed meditation where you focus on an object and calm your mind. The idea is disciplinary or controls your mind and your thoughts.

The third one is wisdom. We should mediate with wisdom. How I understand it we should question all the teachings and accept only the ones which make sense to us. We should all the time pursue for wisdom as knowledge is power.

Dalai Lama in his teachings encourages people to keep their faith and not to change it to Buddhism which I found fascinating. I like the idea that he don’t try to convert people, he just like to help them. He is saying the people from different religions can found some good things about Buddhism without changing their religion and that I find really important to me. I don’t like people telling me what I should be; I like to find my own path which is good for me. I don’t have to put name to it, I analyze different religions and I learn good things about them and I create my own path.

I am not looking for religion to follow; I am just looking for to be happy.  I have lived and opened my mind to Christian world and I have learnt a lot but now it is time to explore the world of Buddhism to see and learn what lay on the “other side”.

For my family and friends who are wondering what is happening here in Africa:

CONAKRY, GUINEA

This is a poor country and there is some restlessness. People are protesting on the streets and some people have died during the protests so our movements are restricted. We can’t go certain areas but it does not really affect anything. People have been still going out enjoying life. People seem very friendly but there are soldiers and police forces everywhere which is good thing, it makes us feel safer. There is not lot of white people which is little bit different than in Sierra Leone. Feels like things are better here compare to my time in Sierra Leone. The city is quite big and there are some nice looking buildings but in general the landscape is pretty poor.

I came here 2 weeks ago and the arrival was easier than last time, I wasn’t so nervous!! J When I arrived in the airport there wasn’t anyone to pick me up and that point I felt I bit “strange”. I was in a country where nobody understands me. People speak France here!! I called the office asking what is happening; luckily I managed to find a phone number to call!!! So there I was waiting in the airport, scared and confused, but in an hour a guy from the ship came  to pick me up and everything was good. I got on the ship safe and sound!! J

I was really excited to come back to the ship!! Last time was a blast and this time it is the same, except, I do miss some of my friends who were here last time. L

I feel I need this, I think that is why I am back here. I have learnt that true happiness can only be found by helping other people so at the end I am here for myself, sounds selfish but is not. I am helping the people here and they are helping me, it is two way street. All wins. There are so many good things about this ship; the patients are just one of the reasons. People makes this ship and being part of this amazing mission makes me feel really good.

People are asking what I am doing here!! Work!! J Ship stuff!! If you are interested to know I put something down what I am actually doing here this time.

I am now here as Second Officer but as an extra. I am working on special projects which do not make ME special!! J Last year together with a Finnish company called NAPA we started a project to get a stability program and finally I am here to finish the work. I am training people to use the program and I am setting up the program. NAPA made the program for free (price 25.000 euros) YES, FOR FREE!!!!!! AMAZING!!! So it has been a privilege to work on this cool project!! J I met the guys in Finland when I visited the NAPA office and I it was just super cool.

I am also working on other stuff like risk assessments and planned maintenance program (AMOS) and couple times a week I have been on duty as a duty officer.

I have also been helping the security when they did eye-screening for over 200 people. That was a cool day. The eye-screening site is about an hour drive and it is in an old hospital.
I worked as a security personnel to help smooth operations. Sometimes the screening events can get out of the hand because the ship can’t treat all the people.

The guys did their first dives couple days ago!! Divers need to keep the intakes clean and the ship divers have to dive from time to time to make sure the intakes are clean. I didn’t dive this time but I helped the guys with the communication on the boat.

We have been playing football and ultimate Frisbee but I have been also on a zumba class and we have had a barn dance night which was good fun!! J I have also been out few times just for a few drinks.  Most of the time I have been reading and trying to meditate but I will get to that little bit later.
I also been spending some time with the patients, there are some really cool kids onboard.

I still have two weeks left and I am hoping to visit our hope center, some local churches and maybe the near islands. I was planning to go to the islands today but the weather is crap!! L

That is Africa so far.

“External circumstances can contribute the one's happiness and well-being but ultimately happiness and suffering depends on the mind.” - Dalai Lama

My "journey"

Now it is time to update you how my "journey" is proceeding. Last weeks I've been feeling amazing, I feel great and that is not because I've done something extraordinary, just the opposite. I've been at work the last 6 weeks, just focusing on the day. I have been reading books like Dalai Lama -"the art of happiness" and Deepak Chopra -The Ultimate Happiness Prescription: 7 Keys to Joy and Enlightenment and one of the best book I´ve ever read was The Monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma. Really good books and I can highly recommend those books to read!! The books have given me strength and believe that I can find my inner peace.

My daily routines have been consistent quite similar things everyday. I work 8 hours a day and try to eat at least 5 times a day, small meals though. I have added a serious work out program to my daily routines, the BOOT CAMP-program. I have been giving aerobic classes to my co-workers every second day which have helped me a lot to get fit and after every class I have spent about 20 minutes lying on the floor in silence trying to clear my mind. Amazing!! I am getting better on that.

All my days I have filled with different projects and things so I haven't given a lot of time to see the world outside this ship. I have created a small little world were I just focus on the moment where I can feel great, feel excited, feel awesome. I have been living in a moment.

"The mind is the source of happiness and unhappiness."-Buddha

I have cut all "pleasures" and just living a normal life, doing normal things. What I mean about the pleasures is that I haven't drink any alcohol, no sweets and no sex. I have been living simple life and I LOVE IT!! My mind is clear, I don't have any worries and I feel COMPLETE.

Let's see what I have actually done for my happiness...

First, I have taken care of my mind and my body. I haven't put any toxic into my body and I have given my mind some "nutritions" by reading and studying.

I have been serving others by giving classes to my co-workers.

"True happiness can only be find by serving other"-Dalai Lama

I have been reading happy books which affect my mood and my attitude.

"Positive attitude is the key to happiness."

I have been meditating.

Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom. -Buddha

I have been trying to clear my mind without any substances, I have to admit it has been hard but I am getting better. This is really important part of finding inner peace, to let your mind rest from time to time. All the worries and bad feelings comes inside us and usually it is because we are stressed, tired or something bad has happened to us. Able to control our mind we can change those feelings to good feelings. I have been trying it and it´s been hard but I believe that in few years I will be able to do it in same level.

"In the midst of moments and chaos, keep stillness inside you", -Deepak Chopra

I have given time for myself and doing things I love to do, like reading and working out. I have been analyzing my daily routines and trying to see things I could have done better. So I have been trying to developing and growing up but not as an adult, I mean as a human.

“The less you open your heart to others, the more your heart suffers” -Deepak Chopra

"It's never too late to live your childhood" SOOOO TRUEEE!!! :)

I have been keeping myself busy all the time so the FLOW of my life have been active which have given me lot of joy and happiness.

"We are happiest when we do things we do best"

I have been writing and calling to my friends and family which have given me a feeling of belonging and being loved. One of the most important things on this life, "to love and be loved". Without love there wouldn't be happiness. Love is happiness.

"We have to love ourselves and give love to get love, a rule of happiness."

Moments, I have created moments. For example now good music is playing in the background, sun is raising and I am alone just seeing the beauty of this morning and loving the music. Simple. I appreciate the beauty of this world and enjoying it.

"Happiness is a ride, just jump onboard and enjoy the view."

I understand to appreciate everything and anything. I don't take anything for granted. I appreciate  my health, my family and my friends. I appreciate my wok and other people. I appreciate my life, my home, my bed....

“The secret of attraction is to love yourself. Attractive people judge neither themselves nor others. They are open to gestures of love. They think about love, and express their love in every action. They know that love is not a mere sentiment, but the ultimate truth at the heart of the universe.” -Deepak Chopra

Self-discipline has helped me to feel better. I've done my work out on time and I have had restrict "diet". The achievement by being restrict to yourself makes you feel amazing!! :)

"Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward."
-Napolean Hill

So there are some of my feelings and things I do for my happiness. We are all individuals and something works for someone and other things works for someone else. These things works for me.

I am loving the ride every day I hope you could too.

Let's be happy because, just because. :)

Happiness at work

“Happiness at work is about mindfully making the best use of the resources you have to overcome the challenge you face. Actively relishing the highs and managing the lows will help you maximize your performance and achieve your potential. And this not only builds your happiness but also that of others- who will be affected and energized by what you do”
-Defining Happiness at work by Dr Laurel Edmunds and Jessica Pryce–Jones at Wikipedia
We spend hours and hours every week working, we spent days, months, years at work at least most of us. We spend big part of our lives working, so should we enjoy it and be happy while doing it? I think we should. It is not easy to enjoy work all the time and be happy but there are ways to make it better and more enjoyable. Most important; the work should be FUN!!

Happiness is inside us so first we concentrate on that and then we begin working on external issues.
Our mind is the tool to happiness; we don’t need more money, success etc…Our brain is adapting organ which develop constantly and by mobilizing our thoughts and practicing new ways of thinking, we can reshape our nerve cells and change the way our brain works.

                -Crazy ah?

First things first, our attitude counts. Anything can be fun if we think it is fun, it’s all in our heads. I know it is not that simple but it is a start. We have to start somewhere so we begin from ourselves. Maybe the job doesn’t suck maybe the problem is us, the way we think and the way we act.
- I love my job, I love my job, I love my job…
-I don’t have a problem; my job is the problem or is it other way round?
STEP ONE

Let’s decide to be happy at work.
-I have to work or do I?
“Single biggest obstacle to work place happiness is the belief that we are prisoners of circumstance, powerless before the things that happen to us”.
Srikumar Rao, the author of Happiness at Work

We have to see the big picture. Work is a big part of our lives we just have to accept that, so when we accept that we don’t feel like we are forced to work. If we feel forced to work it can’t be enjoyable and we can’t be happy. We do need money or do we? We need food and water all the other stuff is extra. In western countries we really don’t have to work to get food and money so we are not really forced to work, we have social security which provides us our basic needs. The more we understand this concept the happier we can be at work.
-How can I see the big picture?
Many times when our bills are piling up and we feel that we need to get some money and we need to work. We feel that we are forced to work. Let’s work on that. Can bills kill us?? What can happen if we can’t pay the bills? If we really think, nothing really! We could lose all our assets but we are borrowing them anyway, as we know when we will leave this earth we can’t get anything with us. At the end we are taking care of all kind of stuff and when we pass away someone else will take care of them.

Amazing!
- I hate bills but I love to pay them. If I collect a million bills does it make me rich or poor?

WORK, WORK, WORK

“Every minute of being miserable we lose 60 seconds of happiness”
-I will work until I die to make a million euros then I will be happy!
It is always good to see the bright side, it’s not always easy but if we think why we should waste our time by being miserable because our time is limited. Like Dalai Lama wrote on one of his book that one part of happiness is to accept death. Our time is limited and we have to realize that, we can’t run away death, it will come. That is part of self-conscious which helps us the build our self-images which guides us to happiness. Like happiness in general we need to have our basic elements for happiness in order to achieve it also at work and accepting life as it is, is one of those elements.

“Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” ~Dalai Lama

We also have to understand that job satisfaction is not happiness and we can feel fine at work but it doesn’t mean we are happy; we could feel great and that is happiness. Happiness can be achieved in every work place and it is contagious but not eternal. We will have up and downs like always in life but happiness at work can be long-term if we just make it happen.

  LET’S HAVE A CHAT

“Lack of communication from the top was seen as one of the biggest causes of unhappiness”
-Happiness at work research report 2007 by Chimento

We all are in the same boat as the saying goes and sometimes it is good to get to know who we work with, even if we are not interested.  Getting known your co-workers help you work together. See socializing as a part of your work.
By socializing with other co-workers we create an open working environment which helps us to communicate better which is part of work happiness.

We should encourage people more face-to-face communication so we could express more our feelings and ensure that our staff isn’t working isolated without any support. We should be supportive to get support; team work is one key part to happiness at work.
- Talk to the hand!!
-No, take time to communicate.

FUN, FUN, FUN

Life is about moments and sometimes we need to escape from our common lives and create some amazing moments. Also at work! They can be small things like bringing a chocolate to your co-workers or remembering someone’s birthday, anything, something out of the normal routines.
Good joke is an excellent way to have few laughs and relax for a minute or two. We need to “escape” from the work environment from time to time to clear our minds and get new perspectives to our work. It helps us to be more creative.

     4.   Have sufficient resources, be able to delegate
     5.   Learn from problems

PUMP IT, PUMP IT

One of the basic elements for happiness is your health and it also works at work. Our physical health is connected to our mental health. Eating healthy and exercising makes us happier; we have to work out for our happiness.

How much exercise do we need then? Here is one answer:

Recommended activity levels
According to the government, only 37 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women take enough exercise to get any benefit from it. To avoid obesity, heart disease and other life-limiting conditions, the chief medical officer (the government's top doctor) recommends the following:
·         Adults should do a minimum of 30 minutes moderate-intensity physical activity, five days a week.
·         You don't have to do the whole 30 minutes in one go. Your half-hour could be made up of three ten-minute bursts of activity spread through the day, if you prefer - it's the total that matters.
·         The activity can be a 'lifestyle activity' (in other words, walking to the shops or taking the dog out) or structured exercise or sport, or a combination of these. But it does need to be of at least moderate intensity, again measured by it making you slightly breathless or a little warm.
·         People who are at specific risk from obesity, or who need to manage their weight because of a medical condition, need 45-60 minutes of exercise at least five times a week. For example, if you have diabetes, it will be much better controlled if you exercise like this.
                                                         - BBC Health by Dr Gill Jenkins in December 2010
Sufficient sleep makes a huge difference. We shouldn’t try to manage with few our rest, our body and brains need to rest.

Daytime naps are another strategy some people use to make up for lost sleep during the night. Some evidence shows short naps (up to one hour) can make up, at least partially, for the sleep missed on previous night and improve alertness, mood and work performance. But naps don’t substitute for a good night sleep.
-Your Guide to Healthy sleep by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Healthy sleeping habits lead to better moods, a reduced risk of obesity, better memory and learning ability and a healthier immune system. How much sleep we get and the quality of that sleep needs to be a part of our fitness program and a priority in forming a healthier lifestyle. Fitting sleep into our already packed schedule can be a challenge and often becomes something that we compromise…How much sleep are you getting?

Pack snacks with you. We all know how crumby we can get if our sugar levels drop down. Have a snack every 2 hours to keep your sugar levels up, that will help you to keep your positive attitude throughout the day.

MR. NICE GUY

We need to respect each other and treat everybody as we would like to be treated. Be polite and do nice thing for your co-workers. What goes around comes around. Times when you need help it make it so much easier to get if you have helped someone else earlier.

7 tips by Jeff Stiebel

    1.    Smile
    2.   Stop worrying
    3.   Take a break
    4.   Do things differently
    5.   Stop managing and start leading
    6.   Delegate
    7.   Have fun

ARE WE DIFFERENT?

Learning what truly makes us happy is an individualized process and something that works for someone doesn’t mean it will work for everybody.

One man’s happiness can be another’s living hell.

Working in a team is always a challenge, different backgrounds, and different religious and different ways of doing things.  There are as many different ways to do things as they are people but finding the golden gateway it’s important. We have to realize that maybe the way we do things is not the only way; there can always be better and more efficient way.

We need to be open-minded to work in a team or even if we work alone, we still need to be able adapt new ways to do things. Even if we work alone, our work affects other people in some way.

We all are different and we all have different needs and habits, different ways to do things and different opinions but that makes us all special. No one is better than other; we are all on the same planet, made of same kind of flesh and blood but what makes us different is the way we think. We all have same beginning but different ending. We choose the way we think regardless of wealth, place or background. We choose to be happy and we decide what makes us happy; it’s all in our heads.

DON’T BE AN ASS

No one wants to hear how good car you have or how big is your house. People don’t like to hear those things. I know that I don’t feel comfortable to hear how great other people lives are. I feel great hearing if my love ones are doing great but hearing people that I just know bragging about their lives doesn’t make me feel good, just opposite. It is important to be the one who listen not the one who brags. No one likes show ups!!  This helps you to create better relationships with your co-workers which lead to happiness.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE

Sometimes our supervisors need us for some extra job, it is not their fault, and they just need someone to do the job.  It is always good to volunteer to raise the spirit and be example. Sometimes we feel tired and fed up but in the long term all the effort is worth it.
We know how boring it can be to attend all the meetings but it is important to be part of matters which concern your company, we need to express our opinions because it does matter, it matters to you. Be proud what you do and feel passionate about your job.
Also all the company gatherings, parties etc. ATTEND!!  Just pay a quick visit even if you are not really interested to attend because as we all know the gossips and funny stories begin from those events and we want to be part of those laughs. Laughing relaxes us and brings us happiness.

HAPPINESS AT WORK SURVEY

Let’s make a survey.

Answer the following questions.

Questions to Ask About Your Job:
  • Is my work important?
  • Am I giving something to my company?
  • Does my work excite me?
  • Can this work challenge me?
  • Can I be proud about my work?
  • Would I think about my work even when I'm not working
  • Am I passionate about my job?
  • Can I achieve anything?
  • Can I make true friends of my co-workers?
So how it went?

These are the questions we should ask when we are thinking about our dream job. If we are able to answer yes to all those questions we are at our dream job but if we just got one or two “yes” - answers maybe we should quit our job and find a new one.

Don’t get depressed if you didn’t get any “yes”-answers, we can work on that. Now we know what makes us happy at work so we can start doing things for it.

We want to be happy at work? YES!
We know what we need to be happy at work? YES!

We can be happy at work? YES!

Yes, yes and YES!

CONCLUSIONS

At the end we are us happy as we think we are and happiness can be found in every work place. The biggest obstruction to our happiness is our mind. To found happiness we need dedication, hard work and time. We need to know what makes us happy and prioritize most important things in our life.
Work is just a work but it is big part of our life so why waste time to be miserable at work if we can be happy.
